End of May to early June

The following painting sessions are cancelled;

Saturday, May 28
Monday, May 30.
Saturday, June 4
Saturday, June 11

Most of the regular coordinators are busy getting ready for Open Studios and then will be busy the first two weekends in June.  We are looking for others who may like to lead the group on those dates and will post locations if we find someone so check the blog for details.

Hope to see you at the Open Studios and good luck with the event if you are participating. You can check the Pro Arts Open Studio online directory to see what studios are open and where they are located.

Monday, May 23

We will meet in front of Berkeley Bagels at 1281 Gilman Street in Berkeley. This is part of the Westbrae district of Berkeley and there are small cottages and lot of flowers, cafes, flower shops, nurseries. It feels like we are in the south of France. If you are coming from Richmond or Oakland you can take the Gilman exit from 80 and follow Gilman across San Pablo to the address. It is between Santa Fe and Curtis Streets.

Saturday, May 21

We'll meet at the corner of Navellier Street and Schmidt Lane in El Cerrito. Take the Central exit, make a left on San Pablo Ave, and a right on Moeser. Make a left on Navellier and a right on Schmidt Lane. On Schmidt Lane, there is a dirt road entering the Hillside Natural Area. This hill affords natural and urban views. Bring your water to drink, a hat for the sun, and a cell phone. Please park on Schmidt Lane and wait for the others.

El Cerrito

We have been painting a few time in the hills in El Cerrito near the recyling site. There is a path in the Nature Area but I had too much stuff with me to go too high.  Karen

Monday, May 16

We will meet again in front of Sophia Cafe, at 1247 Solano Ave in Albany
( at Masonic).  This section of Solano Ave in Albany has some colorful
stores, an old movie theater with beutiful mosaic sidewalk, an  old
fashion ice cream parlor and cafes.  We can set up on the sidewalk
near the stores or on the paths below the bart train.

Ninth Street Corner

This is the painting I was doing in the photo  (see the post titled "Painting in Berkeley").  It was a windy day, but we were in the shelter of a tall warm wall.  Hooray!  I used a photo to record the windblown clouds for later work in the studio.

Painting in Berkeley

Members of the East Bay Landscape Painters hugged the wall on a recent early spring day at 8th and Cameilia to get out of the wind.  Wind is difficult to deal with when you go outside painting.  My easel blew over just at the end of the 3 hour session.  Karen

9th Street in Berkeley

The group met at Harrison Park and decided to revisit the location at Camelia and the Ninth Street. On 9th St. looking to the South, the interesting shape of the building drew my attention. In the painting,  the foreground on the right was very empty.  I painted the sign on the road which leaded me to add the figure to the painting.  I hoped it helped to balance the composition. This was done with oil on a 12 by 16 gesso board."   Philip Ng

Overlooking the Bay

Finally had some clear sunny weather so we have gone back to the cemetery and also painted in a new place in El Cerrito. Both locations gave overlooks of the bay so I have been working on paintings with similar formats.  So unused to the sun that at the El Cerrito location I had too much and went home  and drank 3 glasses of orange juice.    Both paintings are 24 by 36 acrylic on canvas    Karen

Monday, May 2

Finally it is clear and sunny. We will meet at Sunset View Cemetery at Colusa and Fairmont Streets in Kennsington.  Betsy will be the lead for the day. Meet her at the parking lot and she will show you a good place to paint at the cemetery.  Bring a hat and water to drink.
